All too often, I see posts on social media poking fun at consultants and making the work that they do seemingly low-effort or unintelligent. A great example of this, is the reaction to the NYC trash analysis. New York City paid McKinsey (a major management consulting firm) $1.6 million dollars to find a more efficient solution to discarding waste. The conclusion the company came to was utilizing trash bins, instead of throwing trash bags onto the curb. This less-than-revolutionary analysis does not make consulting look like a brilliant industry to the general public. This is why I decided to ask Ai (Microsoft Copilot) if it finds management consultants to be important.

Here was my prompt: "Briefly explain the importance of management consultants; do you see them as vital to the business world?"

This was Copilot's response: "Management consultants play a crucial role in the modern business ecosystem. Their primary importance lies in offering an objective, external perspective combined with specialized expertise that many companies might lack internally. By diagnosing complex operational issues, identifying inefficiencies, and uncovering market opportunities, consultants help organizations streamline their processes, reduce costs, and enhance overall performance. In rapidly evolving industries where change is constant—be it through technological disruption, shifting consumer demands, or global market dynamics—the fresh insights and best practices they bring can lead to substantial competitive advantages.

I do see management consultants as vital. Especially during periods of transformation or crisis, their ability to evaluate entrenched challenges without internal biases makes them invaluable partners. They not only offer strategic advice but also facilitate the implementation of change, ensuring that companies are resilient, adaptive, and well-positioned for sustainable growth. This combination of expert analysis, innovative problem-solving, and execution support is why many businesses continue to rely on management consultants to drive their success." - Microsoft Copilot

I generally agree with the Ai. Consultants are generally utilized to provide an outside perspective on your business issue, in order to produce outside-of-the-box solutions. Copilot seems to show the value of consultants from the viewpoint of their intelligence and experience. Consulting, as a field, rests a lot of importance on education and management practice. This primarily comes down to what you studied in college being foundational for your general understanding of a variety of business topics and casing practice that trains your brain to solve problems in a very detailed and efficient manner. I appreciate Copilot reinforcing the importance of these points as they pertain to the field.

Utilizing Ai in this manner was a very interesting experience for me. I often worry about the volatility of many corporate industries with the oncoming wave of Ai integration into the workplace. It was quite reassuring to me that Copilot defended the management consulting industry and drove home the point about the importance of expertise and intelligence consultants bring to the table. My hope is that consultants can use Ai as a tool to improve their processes without the Ai totally replacing them.
